The project has three main areas:

The Casino
The Convention Centre
Renovation to the existing hotel tower

Casino:

The drywallers were the dominant trade in the casino during January and installed a significant amount of ceiling and bulkhead framing and drywall and taping. The large centre vault and smaller vaults at level 183 were drywalled. The level 163 ceilings were substantially framed with drywall board progressing. Painters proceeded on all areas open to them including the vaulted ceilings above the upper gaming floor. The tiling crews completed washroom floors and walls. The millworkers have started onsite and are working at the centre vault and at the upper smoking area. The access floor trade is now on site and is laying out at the upper casino floor. Work continues at the ceiling in the Hotel Atrium lobby and below the escalator crew has started to set up the escalator #3. The west side of the casino, the show bar, staff and administration areas are framed with mechanical and electrical rough-ins proceeding. The envelope glass is all installed with the exception of a few selected pieces and at two frames at the northwest corner. The stucco crew started on the exterior east casino wall.  

Convention Centre:  

The roofing membrane was completed overtop of the future restaurant and kitchen areas and to the high level roof overtop of the ballroom. Sheet metal and cast iron piping continued in the convention centre. 

Hotel:

Work continues at the hotel mezzanine with raising pipes and electrical rough-in. The area is drywalled and taping is started.  

Off-site work:

Civil work was near completion and the ductbanks for permanent power were also near complete. Hydro will be onsite in early February to inspect and then permanent power can be ordered.

Project Description

Overview:

  • A total floor area of 290,000 square feet, of which 120,000 square feet is for the casino area and  35,000 square feet is for the convention centre
  • A full renovation to the existing 23-storey hotel
  • Two levels of underground parking below the casino with a total area of 135,000 square feet
  • A new pedestrian bridge connecting the new casino to the existing Burnaby Casino
  • Additional exterior surface parking, two water features and soft landscaping
  • Additional off-site work including: street lights, traffic signals and dividers

Structure:

  • Building structure: a mix of steel and concrete
  • Two below grade parking levels and the first gaming floor: reinforced concrete structure
  • Second gaming floor and the mezzanine: steel structure with steel deck and concrete topping
  • Roof: a steel deck with a TPO roofing system
  • Building envelope: a combination of precast-concrete panels, EIFS, aluminum entrances and curtain wall
