Conceptual Introduction

The planned design is envisioned as a memorable landmark building providing an open platform for the cultural life of the community and its visitors.  The facility will be a destination for visitors, providing dynamic exhibitions and interactive events telling the Abbotsford community story and expressing its vision to the world beyond.

The PCL/TRBP-HCMA design fulfills Abbotsford's vision by:

  • providing an efficient and management facility, interpreting the City of Abbotsford and able to support artistic events aimed at enriching the lives of its citizens and visitors.
  • offering flexible exhibition and event space, functional curatorial resources and state of the art environmental controls, allowing effective overlap between planned exhibition, studio and curatorial spaces.
  • providing a dynamic environment where the many facets of art and history are presented as a significant part of the 'story' of the community experience.
Project Description

The 20,000-square-foot facility will provide dynamic exhibitions and interactive events telling the Abbotsford community story. It will include a great hall, exhibition, studio, administration and curatorial spaces.

This building foundation consists of pad and strip footings with a 17,500-square-foot slab on grade floor plate and 2,500-square-foot upper mezzanine and mechanical room. The steel structure is closed in by a mixture of insulated metal panels, metal cladding, brick veneer, curtain wall and TPO roofing.   The exterior is highlighted by a feature wall with a programable coloured dancing LED uplighting system.

The interior space has been designed to be an open and flexible exhibit display area, providing classroom space to conduct workshops and classes as well as storage and handling areas. The interior finishes consist of a natural polished concrete floor, painted walls, and open concept painted ceiling with a unistrut support system in the main display space to accommodate custom track lighting and exhibits.

The energy efficient mechanical system has been designed with utmost quality to provide a stable controlled environment for a museum and art gallery setting by using an open loop geothermal radiant heat system with below grade ducts to supply low velocity air displacement ventilation.
